Hermiston School District is placing 20 routers in mobile home parks, and apartment complexes to facilitate distance learning. The routers have a wi-fi radius of 100-150 yards.
To utilize the Google platform for distance learning, a Chromebook device must be connected to the internet. This can be achieved by using a personal hot spot, access to a public wireless system, or getting assistance at the district office. Once a Chromebook successfully accesses the internet, it should automatically connect to a district router (named HSD_Home) nearby. District Chromebooks will be the only device to connect to the routers.
Routers have been placed at the following locations:
- 3 at Vista Mobile Home Park
- Ridgeway Apartments
- 5th and Madrona
- NW 6th, between Hartley and Ridgeway
- 1200 block of W Ridgeway
“Human connection is just as important as a wireless one,” stated Dr. Tricia Mooney, superintendent of schools. “Teachers want to connect with their students and we want to apply our resources to make it a possibility. Parents identified connectivity being a major obstacle, and the district is working hard to mitigate that challenge to accommodate all students.”
Families without internet access will continue to have the option of picking up printed packets from the school on a weekly basis.
